Q. Someone told me to never clean or vacuum oriental rugs.
A. 80% of soil in rugs is dry. It acts as sandpaper and wears the rug out. Because some rugs are so thick, they do not appear to be soiled when in fact the soil is so embedded that it is impossible to remove all of it. Beware of anyone selling rugs that say they should never be cleaned. What they really mean is the rug will not withstand proper cleaning due to condition, foundation painting, or hidden defect.
Q. Can my rug be cleaned in my home?
A. No, only on rare occasions does this happen. By taking the rug out of the home we can dust the rug thoroughly, clean the fringes and the rug is in a much more controlled environment.
Q. How often should rugs be cleaned?
A. It depends on where they are used, the number of people and/or pets in the house, and the amount of wear they receive. Rugs that see a lot of foot traffic, have sand/gravel driveways/walkways or leave near a beach should have them cleaned once a year. Rugs in rooms seldom used can be cleaned every three to five years. Please do not make the mistake of going 5, 10 or 20 years without cleaning.
Q. How do I treat spots and spills?
A. Whatever you do, do not use Resolve, Oxy clean or any of these grocery store products. These products are too aggressive, leave detergent residue and can bleach the rug. We suggest a water/white vinegar solution for pet stains, club soda, and an all purpose spotter that we sell. Remember to remove as much as possible prior to treating. Blot up as much liquid as possible with a white cloth. After treating spot, blot with towel (no circular scrubbing).
Q. Can you get pet stains and odor out of rugs?
A. Pet stains are 99.9% permanent. Your best chance of preventing this is to get to the accident right away. The odor can usually be removed with our soaking and cleaning process we do in our shop.
Q. Do I need rug pads?
A. Absolutely, Rug pads keep the rug from slipping, protect the floor, absorb room noise, and make the rug last longer. We are happy to supply a custom cut rug pad for you.
Q. What do I do about moths?
A. The rug should be cleaned immediately to mitigate damage and protect the rest of the house from infestation. Setting off bombs of insecticide are not enough. The room must be cleaned top to bottom, including turning over your furniture where it is dark and quiet. The rug can be treated in our shop after cleaning with a moth deterrent but regular vacuuming and cleaning of the room is necessary to prevent a re-infestation.
Q. Can the sun actually fade my rug?
A. Yes sunlight through your window can and will fade your rug. Colors fade unevenly and wool and cotton dry out and become brittle.
Q. Should I rotate my rug?
A. Yes, rotating your rug periodically will help equalize the effects of wear.
